CCT Founder Executive Director

Gary Markowski

I first traveled to Cuba in the mid-1990s to meet with staff at Cuba’s National Museum of Natural History. My goal was to explore ways to become involved with conservation initiatives in this beautiful and biodiverse country. That initial trip laid the groundwork for what would become a long-standing and fruitful collaboration. By the following winter, a fledgling group of authorized U.S. citizens arrived in Cuba to participate in our bird survey program. Since then, hundreds of 'citizen scientists,' along with dozens of U.S. and Cuban ornithologists, field biologists, and educators, have joined our efforts. My 30 years of experience in environmental and experiential education, outdoor leadership, and adventure travel have provided the foundation for Caribbean Conservation Trust's (CCT) success in Cuba.

Our long history in Cuba is built on experience and trust. Over the years, I have cultivated deep friendships and professional relationships with some of Cuba’s finest conservation-oriented individuals and institutions. Our Cuban staff is highly educated, experienced, personable, and devoted to making your experience in Cuba extraordinary. Together, we have created a unique program that not only contributes to bird conservation but also enriches the lives of those who participate. I am incredibly proud of the work we have done and the positive impact we continue to have on Cuba's natural heritage.
